Intense Pulse light is a technology used to perform various skin treatments, from hair removal to skin rejuvenation. The LYNTON IPL technology (Excelight) is widely considered as one of the best on the market with Lynton supplying machines to the NHS.
IPL is an effective method for removing unwanted hair from the body. It works by directing light energy at the pigment cells (melanin) within hair. The hair shaft contains a high concentration of melanin. This energy is absorbed by the melanin which heat up, causing damage to the hair follicle and shaft. Over time, the damaged hair sheds from the skin, thereby reducing the amount of hair on that area of skin.
Treatment is repeated in a 4 to 6 week cycle and it may take up to 12 treatments (on certain parts of the body) to achieve optimum results. Although significant improvement is usually seen by the 4th treatment. As IPL relies on pigmentation within the hair follicle to work, treatment is most effective in people with fair skin (little pigment) and dark hair (high pigment concentration). The Lynton IPL is incredibly powerful and as such, can work on most hair and skin types although not on very dark skin.
A complimentary initial consultation and patch test is always recommended to determine your suitability for this hair removal method.
How does it work?
The process of light assisted hair removal is relatively straight forward. Pigment in hair absorbs light to create heat. If there is sufficient heat generated, this causes damage to the cells within the root of the hair to delay and or prevent future hair growth.
Treatment needs to be repeated as only approximately 20% of hair is in the optimal stage to absorb the light energy required to cause optimal damage. However, with each subsequent treatment, the hair becomes finer.

Does it hurt?
The sensation caused by treatment with the Lynton Excelight IPL machine can vary between individuals. Most people describe feeling a “hot flick” of an elastic band during the treatment however, discomfort is usually mild and tolerable.
Treatment generates heat in the hair shaft but cooling is applied immediately after treatment to avoid excess heating of treatment areas.
What are the benefits?
The Lynton Excelight IPL machine is:
- A very effective hair removal system: arguably the best IPL machine available
- A relatively short procedure time, approximately 20 – 90 minutes depending on treatment area
- Effective on most skin types: Fitzpatrick I – VI
- Ideal anytime of the year
- Lasting results
Treatment: What to expect?
Goggles must be worn during treatment to protect your eyes from the bright light that the system generates. You will hear the buzzing of the machine and also feel a “hot flick” (as described above) or mild heat sensation during treatment. Occasionally the smell of burning hair can occur.
Post treatment the skin is cooled and a soothing balm is applied to settle the skin.
Treatment is best on skin that has not been exposed to direct sunlight for a minimum of 6 weeks prior. If your skin is tanned (fake or otherwise) treatment will not be commenced until the tan has either been removed or naturally fades.
You can shave but must not wax or pluck the treatment area in the week leading up to treatment. We want the hair follicle to be present in the skin at the time of treatment.
