Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis is the technique whereby, extremely cold temperatures are applied to areas of the body to reduce the number of fat cells in subcutaneous pockets by inducing controlled fat cell death (apoptosis).
CoolSculpting® (using cryolipolysis) is the world’s first licensed fat-freezing treatment, having been registered by the FDA back in 2010. Coolsculpting® is the first device specifically designed to reduce fat without surgery. In recent years, the treatment’s popularity has grown with more than 11 million treatments performed worldwide.
CoolSculpting® is therefore considered to be the world’s leading non-invasive fat freezing procedure and ideal for body sculpting and the reduction of stubborn areas of fat.
It is incredibly effective, promising up to 27% fat reduction with each cycle of treatment. It is FDA cleared to treat stubborn fat in the following areas:
- stomach,
- underarm (bingo wings),
- flanks (love handles),
- thigh rolls and
- doiuble chin, ‘turkey neck’ regions.
Coolsculpting® at the Wessex Skin Clinic is conducted under the direct supervision of Dr Catherine Fairris, so you can be assured of the highest level of care.
How does it work?
Using the patented Coolsculpting® technology, the machine cools subcutaneous adipocytes (fat cells) to -11 degrees celcius. The technology specifically targets fat cells, therefore avoiding the cooling of other internal organs and structures.
There are multiple safety features to prevent any other structures from being affected by this treatment. Clinical trials show high safety outcomes.

This patient received 3 treatment cycles in 3 treatment sessions using the coolmini applicators to the submental region
What does the treatment involve?
There is an initial assessment and examination to determine whether you would be suitable for treatment. This involves a detailed medical history and examination with multiple photographs and measurements prior to treatment.
On the day of treatment, the treatment areas will be clearly identified and marked out before the Coolsculpt® applicators are applied, as per Coolsculpt® protocol, to your body. Treatment can take upwards of an hour depending on how extensive the area of treatment is.
How long do results last?
Coolsculpt® must be used as part of a healthy lifestyle. It is intended to treat pockets of stubborn fat and should not be considered as a “weight loss” tool or indeed as an alternative to a healthy lifestyle.
Results are expected to show by 12 weeks, although multiple treatment cycles may be required to treat specific areas. There is robust evidence of results lasting in excess of 6 years.
Dr Fairris is very approachable, I always feel listened to and she takes the time to explain everything in detail
