The problem
Melanocytes are the cells responsible for making pigment (melanin) in the skin. These cells can at times start to produce abnormal pigmentation resulting in brown marks / patches on the skin. Excess melanin causes darker areas of skin whilst reduced melanin results in lighter areas.
There are many reasons why brown marks appear on the surface of the skin and can appear on skin of any colour. Common causes include:
- Excess sun exposure
- Hormone related changes e.g. Melasma
- Age related changes
- Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation e.g. caused by acne scarring
There are many ways that these causes of brown marks can be treated.
At the Wessex Skin clinic we would recommend skin rejuvenation with Obagi Nu-Derm products and or the OBAGI Blue Peel.
