Acne

Is your skin prone to getting spots?

The problem

Acne is a common skin condition causing spots on the skin. It can affect people of all ages. Although less common than in teenagers, acne can affect adults. If not properly treated, moderate to severe acne can result in scarring, which can be unsightly and very difficult to treat.

Acne is caused by excess sebum production coupled with blockage of pores and hair follicles (where sebum is produced) leading to a build-up of bacteria which in turn causes infection within the hair-follicle and a build up of dead cells.

Acne can be exacerbated by:

  • wearing heavy make-up (which blocks pores further)
  • frequently touching the face
  • excess sweating
  • some medical conditions: e.g. Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • some medications e.g. anabolic steroids

Acne treatment aims to unblock pores and hair follicles, kill the bacteria causing infection and reduce the inflammation caused by the skins reaction to bacterial activity. Treatment often involves a multi-pronged approach.
